Updating and Improving Search

Converting and enhancing the search experience for managing virtual environments as VMware moved vSphere from a desktop client to a web client.

Key Use Cases

Navigation

Navigate to an object with a known name or portion of name.

Grouping

Locate all the instances of an object based on a set of criteria to manage or monitor the objects.

Auditing

Continually relocate all the instances of an object to monitor objects.

Navigation

Quick search was improved by returning all matching object types, clear link to view all results, and type-ahead to help find specific object names.

"It just gives you an easy and fast way to find what you are looking for in the web client."
- User demo

Grouping

Advanced search was improved by adding a standard query builder and objects are shown in navigator (left side) to support 1-by-1 navigation of search results.

"Very easy, very effective, very fast."
- Vladan SEGET
"Not a huge feature but a very very handy one"
- User demo

Auditing

Saved searches were designed as new functionality to let a user relocate objects without rebuilding search queries.

"I was surprised and very happy at how powerful this was, but, the fun doesn’t stop there – VMware have really thought this through and understand their admins don’t necessarily want to have to fill in three drop boxes every time they run a search! So, they have introduced save searches to make re-doing the exercise all the easier"

Results

Usability testing validated the new design. Search improvements are often listed by users as one of the preferred features of the web client in the 5.0 release.
